Is My DNA Safe?

There are many reasons why you should be careful with how and where you submit your DNA results:

Incomplete Regulations

Currently, the regulations regarding how DNA is stored or transferred are incomplete. With dozens of loopholes, companies can make a profit off your purchasing their take-at-home kits and repeatedly in the future by selling your genetic information to drug companies or other industries.

Data Accessed Without Your Consent

In several instances, take-at-home DNA kit companies have allowed police to access their databases for the purpose of forensics. However, this is a breach of privacy, especially if consumers did not sign an agreement.

In Europe, your data can be shared without your consent for scientific research that’s in the best interest of the public. The data is anonymized–free of personal information such as your name and contact information. The same is true in the United States where test results can be shared if they’re anonymized.

No Such Thing as “Anonymous” DNA Information

It may seem harmless to allow your genetic information to be used–as long as it’s anonymous. However, your genetic information is directly linked to you; it cannot be changed. Research has confirmed that it’s possible to discover the identities of anonymous people using the information from their DNA and publicly available information.

You Can’t Retract Later

Once you’ve submitted your genetic information, you can’t change your mind later. Your genetic information is out there indefinitely, to be sold and/or used by whoever has it. While it may seem innocent to spit in a tube to discover your heritage, it may be a high price to pay later.

Long-Lost Brother and Sister Find Each Other

David Jones had always known he was adopted. His adoptive parents were supportive of David discovering his biological parents. He took a DNA test and located his biological father. But when they met, David’s father had another surprise.

In the first conversation the two had, David’s father revealed that David also had a sister, born in June 1986 at Bayfront Health in St. Petersburg.

When David’s story with his father aired on ABC Action News and shared about his missing sister, dozens of women began contacting him. But none of them matched as his sister.

Kara Bailey also had always known she was adopted, and with the support of her parents, she recently took a 23&Me test and got the results back early.

David Jones was a match, and Kara emailed David to introduce herself. It was a match on David’s results, too.

The two talked on the phone and have shared dozens of phone calls, and finally met the day after Thanksgiving.

Should You Buy a DNA Kit for Christmas?

For years, take-at-home DNA kits have been all the craze for Christmas presents. It’s simple and unique, plus, who doesn’t have an itch to know their ancestry?

But the once-booming DNA market is now dwindling. More than 26 million people have taken an ancestry test, and most of these consumers won’t take subsequent tests. This has DNA kit companies scrambling to save their businesses, and they have come up with a cunning solution. Now, many of these companies offer a spin off the basic DNA kit where customers can learn their predicted future diseases, their ideal diet, and more.

However, we know that these tests aren’t as accurate as advertisements promise. Plus, take-at-home tests are notorious for being used in scams, information being stolen through the mail, information sold from databases, or incorrect results sent to the consumer.

Many experts are cautioning consumers to not reveal their DNA through take-at-home tests.

Even though many take-at-home DNA kits are on sale for the season, wisdom would advise not indulging the desire to learn your ancestry through a take-at-home test. Nor is it the best gift to give your family and friends.

If you need to know answers to your DNA questions, it’s best to submit your DNA through your doctor or a trusted source like DNA Paternity Testing.

Long-Lost Siblings Reunited

When Jane Anderson Holmes finally found her long-lost biological family after 40 years of searching, the coronavirus pandemic couldn’t keep them apart!

Holmes is the first-born child of Nancy Stephens, who was 17 years old when she had Holmes and chose to place her first daughter for adoption in Florida.

Holmes grew up in Florida and Danbury with her adopted brother. She always knew she was adopted, but never pursued knowing her biological family until she reached college.

“The older I got, the more curious I got, and the more longing I had in my heart to know who I was and where I came from,” she said. “Did I have siblings? Was my mother still alive?”

In the pre-internet age, Holmes had little information to go on. She even hired a private investigator who failed in locating the family. But little did Holmes know that her family was looking for her, too.

Stephens gave birth to Tim Cutler two years after Holmes, along with a brother, David Cutler, two years after that. Stephens kept both the boys.

In 1964, Stephens had another boy named George, and two years later, had another girl named Kelly. However, both of these children were placed for adoption. Lastly, Stephens birthed her youngest, Kim, and raised her with Tim and David.

Stephens always wished to know that “all her children” were happy. Tim, David, and Kim began to seek out the family members they knew they had but could not locate.

In late July, Holmes was matched with a first cousin, who was David’s daughter. The family immediately moved to navigate the COVID-19 restrictions and spent Labor Day weekend catching up on a lifetime of stories.

George and Kelly are yet to be found and reunited with the family, but now Holmes can accomplish this with her three siblings.

DNA Discovery Sheds Light on Bladder Cancer

Scientists have been studying cancer for decades. While there’s a lot we’ve learned, there’s also a lot that we still don’t know about cancer. Thanks to DNA technology, scientists are continuing to learn clues about the cancer process and mutations–with the hope of refining cancer treatment.

A study published in Science is the first of its kind. The study analyzes the DNA changes of healthy and diseased human bladder tissue to better understand the genetic changes in healthy and diseased bladder tissue. The results revealed “cancer-driving” mutations are common in healthy bladder tissue.

Surprisingly, the research team found high variability in the number and types of cancer mutations, as well as in the mutation frequency between individuals. This suggests a wide range of factors influence the cancer mutations in the bladder.

Tobacco use has long been a risk factor in bladder cancer. Though the bladder does not come into direct contact with tobacco, the chemicals are filtered out of the body by the kidneys. Therefore, the bladder comes in contact with tobacco in the urine. The study revealed a new mutational signature associated with smoking, confirming the smoking theory.

Thomas Mitchell, a senior author of the study, said: “Like many cancers,  of bladder cancer gives the patient a much greater chance of survival. The presence of mutations in key cancer genes in bladder tumors that are usually absent in normal tissue opens up the possibility of looking for these changes in fragments of DNA that are present in urine. These ‘liquid biopsies’ could be a non-invasive way to screen for bladder cancer earlier, which could help reduce the number of people who die from this disease.”

The Results of Ancient DNA

Analyzing ancient DNA has led to some magnificent findings over the years. We’ve learned a great deal about the history of the world through gene analytics. Now, scientists are discovering the immigration patterns of eastern humankind.

The Eastern Eurasia regions contain approximately 2.3 billion people today. That’s 30% of the world’s population! Archaeologists have learned from fossils and artifacts that humans have occupied Southeast Asia for 60,000 years and East Asia for 40,000 years.

Using bones, fossils, and seeds used by ancient farmers, scientists tracked the migration patterns of the Eurasia peoples.

A particularly interesting discovery is that while many Asian peoples look similar, Eurasian people most likely looked distinct. The genetic codes showed a vast diversity in gene pools, meaning that Eurasian people probably didn’t look the way they do today. It’s likely that their variety of genes were expressed in many ways.

Other genetic patterns indicate connections between individuals from ancient Tibetans, Mongolia, and northern China. However, research concludes that DNA common to all present-day East Asians became consistent about 9,000 years ago.

While this discovery may not impact the lay-person (besides updating your ancestry map!), it shows the rapidly-advancing technology that continues to be helpful both for archaeology and present circumstances.

Can DNA Tests Predict Your Perfect Diet?

DNA testing is becoming increasingly more advanced with every passing year. The scientific community has jumped from using DNA to confirm basic family relations or assisting in forensics to now–predicting the perfect diet that will help you lose weight.

But does it actually work?

The basic science behind DNA diet kits is that specific genes influence how the individual processes food. For instance, someone who has the type CC of the APOC3 gene might be advised to follow a lower-fat diet. That’s because the type CC variation influences triglyceride processing, which can elevate levels of LDL cholesterol when following higher-fat diets.

However, studies show that 110 pairs of identical twins had varying metabolic responses to food depending on meal content, meal context, body composition, and metabolites found in the body’s cells.

In fact, these DNA diet tests aren’t more helpful than traditional advice — limit carbs, increase fiber, cut sodium, and the like. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services shows that genetics only make up 10% of someone’s overall health. Contrastly, behaviors, social and economic factors together make up 70% of overall health.

This is not to say that genetics has no factor in health. Certain diseases, such as Type I diabetes, is known to be affected by genes. However, if you’re looking to improve your overall health and lose weight, it’s more beneficial to focus on lifestyle changes rather than the genetic component.

DTC Looking to Partner With Healthcare Industry

Direct-to-consumer (DTC) tests such as Ancestry.com and 23andMe skyrocketed in sales during the mid-2010’s. DNA kits were all the rage for almost every holiday and birthday. However, in the past few years, this has significantly tapered off.

This could be due to several reasons:

  • After receiving their results, most people aren’t inclined to purchase another DTC test. Since so many Americans have already had a DNA test, there are only so many consumers left to test.
  • Americans may be concerned over DNA information security and are waiting until laws ensure the privacy of such information.
  • Besides for the sake of sheer curiosity, knowing your genetic history has little impact on your daily life.

DTC companies have been scrambling to find new ways to coax consumers to either take the plunge of a first-time purchase or put a new spin on the product to entice a repeat-purchase.

However, now DTC may have found an alternative: partnering with the healthcare system. Seemingly, this would benefit both parties. The DTC wouldn’t have to close their doors, and physicians could enhance their healthcare with the genetic information derived from DNA tests.

This might be well and good for DTC, but DNA Paternity Testing is already incorporated into the healthcare industry! That means there won’t be any kinks or lost information. Our tests can be ordered by physicians or self-ordered.

Brother and Sister Reunited with DNA Test

Sally Laurent was like many people when COVID-19 struck: there were people she still wanted to meet!

Laurent and her older half-sister were both adopted as babies. They were both raised Jewish in their Long Island home, but Laurent always wondered about her biological family. Knowing that it may be now or never, Laurent took a DNA test.

“I discovered there was not one bit of Jewish blood in me, which is okay because I’ve benefited from all of this, you know,” she said.

But more important than her lack of Jewish heritage was that she had a brother–and he also lived on Long Island!

Although Bob Stanco knew he was one of five children, he wasn’t aware of Laurent’s existence. Laurent is the sister he never knew he had.

“I knew I had and brother and a sister, full-blooded, who lived with me growing up. Prior to that, I had no idea anyone until my parents passed away,” Stanco said.

Laurent and Stanco are eager to meet once the pandemic is over. But in the meantime, they are making up for the lost time and getting to know one another through phone calls.

Smallpox Virus Found in DNA of Vikings

For a long time, geneticists, archaeologists, and scientists have studied the genetic makeup of historical findings. Most recently, bones and teeth of several people who lived in northern Europe during the Viking age are being studied by a team at the University of Cambridge. The reason: the bones and teeth carry a strain of ancient smallpox viruses.

The Variola virus has been around for millennia, plaguing populations as old as the Egyptians. This is the virus Barbara Mühlemann and her colleagues have traced and are studying. Their findings are pushing the boundaries on what scientists understand about virus evolution.

The group has thus far determined that the ancient smallpox strain was “derived from the same ancestor as the 20th-century virus, but didn’t give rise to it. Instead, they are a now-extinct side branch.” However, this goes against conventional virology theories, which state that  viruses are most deadly when they first jump to humans and evolve to become less deadly,

Antonio Alcamí at the Autonomous University of Madrid, Spain, hypothesizes that the Viking-age virus wasn’t as deadly as the 20th-century virus. Another explanation given by the team was that the smallpox virus jumped from animals to people more than once.
