Do Genetics Cause Obesity?

It’s an age-old question, and one that many scientists have attempted to answer. Is there a gene that makes an individual more likely to be obese?

Unlike several diseases like Huntington’s and Tay-Sachs that are caused by a single gene error, there is no one gene that we can blame obesity on. There are thousands of factors—and genes—that contribute to obesity.

Sekar Kathiresan, a cardiologist at Harvard and a geneticist at the Broad Institute, and a team of experts set out to determine a genetic pattern for obesity. They hoped to find an answer for why some people struggle to lose or keep the weight off, or are prone to being obese.

Despite their large pool of subjects and millions of genes they analyzed, the findings weren’t conclusive. There was no genetic pattern that led to obesity.

Instead, the study found that the impacts to genetics starts at age 3. This means that preventing obesity starts much earlier in life than we all thought. Prevention of obesity was most successful when healthy lifestyle patterns were taught early in life.

Some of the study’s experts are disappointed that so much money is being poured into genetic analysis for obesity. Instead, they suggest an emphasis on a change to environmental factors, lifestyles, and behaviors that contribute to obesity, and teaching these to our children at young ages.

Law enforcement and home DNA tests

That simple take-at-home DNA test you received at Christmas, a birthday, or other celebrations isn’t as innocent as it would seem. While many people are excited to learn their ancestral history and migration patterns, that knowledge comes at a high price.

The results from take-at-home tests are entered into an ever-increasing database of information. You can’t “retract” your DNA once it’s been submitted. One would assume that these databases are private, but it turns out many databases are used by law enforcement to determine criminals.

Both GEDmatch and Family Tree DNA confirmed that they regularly allow law enforcement to use their databases—a combined total of 2.2 million profiles.

While this may not seem like a bad thing, there could be severe repercussions. Namely, there are no laws surrounding law enforcement’s use of these databases. When law enforcement can take every measure allowed by the courts, there is the potential for abuse of DNA information.

Police will inevitably begin to overstep and apply genetic genealogy not only to major crimes like rape and murder, but also to minor crimes like trespassing. Crime victims may not report because they fear DNA testing of them or their families. Reports are even surfacing of how criminals can manipulate DNA profiles to mislead police.

However, at DNA Paternity Testing, you can rest assured that your results are safe with us! We use extreme measures to keep your medical information secure, especially with our home kits. We train all our staff on all HIPAA compliance policies and ensuring that all tests and counseling remain confidential.

DNA Helps Solve Robbery Crime in Oregon

DNA Helps Solve Robbery Crime in Oregon

In April 2018, Woodland Heights Market in Medford Oregon experienced an armed robbery when the cashier was robbed at knifepoint. The suspect, man covered head to foot in black clothing and sunglasses covering his face, left law enforcement with few leads on the case. But the robber’s one mistake was leaving behind a discarded article of clothing.

Oregon State Police crime lab technicians were able to use the DNA to find their suspect. In many cases, the DNA found on clothing or weapons may not match a specific person entered in genetic databases, but might line up with relatives of the suspect. Fortunate for Oregon law enforcement, this DNA led them straight to the suspect.

“It’s one thing to get a DNA hit, it’s another thing to get a DNA hit that matches to an actual person,” Lt. Mike Budreau explains. “And, in this case, a person that’s local and a person who is on probation. It really lined up well for us.”

Burdreau continues, “We can have smaller and smaller samples that will give us a better and better profiles. We also have more and more offenders that are entering the database that we would have to search from.”

23-year-old Andrew Kyle Beck was arrested and has been charged for robbery in the first degree, finally closing the robbery case.

Switched At Birth Confirmed Through DNA Test

For Christmas 2017, Sandra Pyne was gifted an AncestryDNA test kit to help build a family tree. The results came back a few months later and showed that Pyne, who grew up in a Slavic family, was predominately Italian. Pyne disregarded the information as a simple mix-up.

But in a neighboring town, Debra Zaffuto was also awaiting her AncestryDNA results. Much to her shock, she discovered that she had a full-blood sister less than 20 minutes away! That sister was Sandra Pyne.

Debra and her brother Ron also grew up with a sister named Sandra Smith. Both Sandra’s were born on the same day, September 22, 1942, at the same hospital.

Eventually Debra got the courage to contact Pyne, and a genetic test of Pyne’s sons confirmed that they were Debra’s nephews. DNA tests of Smith confirmed that she was predominately Eastern European. The only explanation is that the infant Sandra’s went home from the hospital with different parents.

Smith was terminally ill with cancer and both parties agreed to not share the shocking news with her. She died in November at age 76.

The three reunited siblings have since been making up for lost time. Debra and Pyne in particular have built a strong bond.

“We may not have been sisters all of our lives, but we will be sisters the rest of our lives,” Pyne said.

Can DNA Tests Tell Your Future?

With every passing year, we gain more and more knowledge of our world and humanity through science. Significant strides are also being made in our understanding of genes and how those affect our personal futures. Is it possible for a DNA test to predict your future?

Consumers often seek to peer into their medical futures by taking a genetic test. Do I carry the gene for Alzheimer’s Disease or breast cancer? Some genetic testing companies believe they can give you the answer.

However, genetics and DNA is incredibly complex. While huge advancements have been made, genetic tests are still not able to predict the medical future of an individual.

A recent analysis of “direct to consumer” tests—like AncestryDNA and 23andMe—found that upon reanalysis of raw data, 40 percent of variants associated with specific diseases were shown to be false positives.

There are even major discrepancies between direct to consumer companies. This is because these companies take a shortcut of only picking the “highlights” of your DNA and don’t sequence your entire genome. But because different companies choose to highlight certain genes and not others, results can appear as conflicting information.

As it turns out, there are no specific genes “for” anything in particular. Even if you do carry a gene for a disease, many variables like diet and exercise can change the impact of that gene. So be wary of companies that advertise a peek into the crystal ball!

Can a DNA test help me lose weight?

The DNA tests of the future claim to go beyond simply identifying our ancestral background or where they migrated from. The next big trend in DNA tests claim to determine your specific genetic code for rapid weight loss.

A recent CNN report highlighted several DNA tests claiming to discover the key to an individual’s weight loss breakthrough. Do you benefit more from diet or exercise? Do you lose more weight eating low-carb or low-fat? They answer, they say, is in your DNA.

It’s no wonder that this grabs the attention of millions of Americans. With countless diseases stealing the health of adults and children alike, combined with our desire for instant gratification, a DNA test that reveals the secrets to speedy weight loss sounds like a worthy investment.

But is it too good to be true?

In short, yes.

Genes and DNA are incredibly complex and contain countless forms of information about each individual. While there may be potential for this in the future, science is not there yet.

Nutrition researcher Christopher Gardner led the DIETFITS trial to determine a certain combination of genes would control whether people lost more weight on a low-carb or a low-fat diet. But the study concluded that the subjects’ genetic profiles were not associated with their chances of successful weight loss.

For now, it looks like the old-fashioned nutrition, diet, and exercise are still the answer to weight loss. Don’t waste your money on DNA tests promising weight loss, because it most likely won’t change your results!

Vietnamese-American Son finds his Father 50 years Later

There are lots of fascinating reunification stories out there, but not many get crazier than this one!

Hugh Nguyen was born to 16-year-old Van Nguyen in Vietnam during the war. Van’s job was to serve coffee and snacks to US soldiers in a tourist area. This is where she met 18-year-old Roy Patterson, Hugh’s father.

After later learning she was pregnant, Van returned to the camp to find Patterson, but fellow soldiers told her that he died in combat.

A few years later, Hugh and his half-sister also fathered by an American solider, were left with their aunt and grandparents. They were to be placed for adoption under President Ford’s Operation Baby Lift, a program to rescue orphaned children fathered by American soldiers.

They were saved from their first brush with death when, overcome with guilt, Hugh’s grandparents pulled both children from the plane before it took off. The plane crashed in rice fields outside Saigon, killing everyone on board.

Hugh and his sister narrowly escaped death a second time when they survived the Tan Son Nhut Airport bombing while trying to fly out of the country. They finally made it out of the country in April of 1975 in one of the last helicopters leaving Vietnam.

Years passed with Hugh wondering who his father was. He took a DNA paternity test in 2015 but no parental results came up. But after connecting with a second cousin through Facebook, the two were able to find Patterson. After Patterson’s paternity test came back with over a 99% parental match, the two met for the first time and were amazed to learn the details of each other’s stories.

Your Privacy is in Jeopardy with Take-at-Home Kits

Millions of Americans received take-at-home ancestry tests for the holidays. It seems like a fun, trivial, or even potentially beneficial gift, but there are layers of potential dangers beneath the pretty wrapping paper.

While we’ve advocated a few times that home tests aren’t smart. They can be used in scams or identity theft. Your information can be sold to big med start-ups. Not to mention, they don’t always give factual information. But this new perspective should steer you away from ever using any take-at-home test!

Sonia Suter, a law professor and bioethicist at George Washington University says “The data (in de-identified form) can be used to refine a company’s analysis or to be shared with other companies for purposes of research about ancestry, traits, and disease.”

She continues to say that while federal laws protect the privacy of medical data, these laws only apply to “health care providers, health plans, health care clearinghouses and business associates of these groups.” They do not apply to direct-to-consumer companies like at-home ancestry tests. Home tests have no laws regulating the use of your medical information!

A Re-Unification 10 Years in the Making

After a long 10-year search, daughter Michelle Cehn and father Greg Hicks shared a sweet reunification through the help of DNA testing.

Michelle was born in 1986 and adopted just hours later by loving parents. Although Michelle describes her childhood in Oakland, California as “blissful,” she always dreamed of meeting her biological parents. With the help and support of her adoptive mother, Michelle found her biological mother, Diane, in 2009 after coming across a family obituary.

While Michelle and Diane’s relationship blossomed over the years, Diane was unable to help Michelle’s search for her father. Diane said she didn’t know him, and had given Michelle up for adoption because she was unable to support her.

Michelle persisted, submitting her DNA to various family tree websites. At first she was only with distant cousins. But finally in April 2018, she located a first cousin on her father’s side!

With excitement and anticipation building, Michelle contacted Greg Hicks—the man she believed to be her biological father—through Facebook. Together they connected the dots and Hicks was confirmed as Michelle’s father through a positive paternity test.

The pair met in the Orange County Airport in California. Watch this heartwarming video to see Greg sprint towards his daughter, and the resulting joy of finding a long-lost family member!

Experts in Australia are calling for laws regulating DNA use

Australia may be on the right track in trying to regulate the use of DNA. A skilled team of biologists, policy analysts, and legal experts from the University of Queensland are calling for a Genetic Data Protection Act.

Their arguments go beyond an innocent citizen’s concern to keep their medical information private. Mainly, the group contends that public trust is at risk. Genetic data being used in one realm—forensics, specifically—drastically impacts the public trust of genetic data used in medicine.

The opposing parties say it’s already gone too far: DNA databases have remained unregulated for so long that it’s almost impossible to contain the information. But this group of experts holds fast that it’s not too late, if action is taken now.

American would do well to follow in Australia’s footsteps to further regulate how genetic information is contained. But in the meantime, you can protect your own information by choosing DNA Paternity Testing for all your genetic testing needs.
